What are expired domains?
Expired domains are domain names that have been registered and the owner has failed to pay to keep the domain. Many people allow the domain name to expire because they think that they own the domain, when in fact, they are only leasing it. When the annual registration has expired, the domain goes into a state of "Pending Deletion." After those 45 days, the domain is put back on the market. Expired domains are very valuable in some instances. Many domains have been developed and have existing traffic going to them, while others are valuable due to the "brandability" of the name. Many people buy expired domains just to sell them back to the original owner. There are approximately 20,000 domains expiring each day. These domains are worth MILLIONS of dollars in the right hands.
